Your engineering team in the UK, hired and run by CTOs

OpenAI, Anthropic and dozens of other US companies are building their next teams in London. We help you do the same: we hire the engineers, lead them with a local full-time / fractional CTO, and either run the whole office for you or help you open your own UK subsidiary.

Pricing on request. We scope it with you on a call.

What is a UK R&D Lab?

A UK R&D Lab is a dedicated engineering team in the United Kingdom that works only on one company's product, set up and run by Metamindz, or by you. In the Managed R&D Lab model Metamindz is the UK employer and runs the team for you, with a local CTO included and an option to transfer the team into your own UK subsidiary later (build, operate, transfer). If you decide to run it yourself, you own the UK entity (with Metamindz' help setting it up), and Metamindz provides CTO-led recruitment and a local full-time / fractional CTO.

Why build your UK team with us

🧪

Hired by engineers, not keyword-matchers

Every candidate is screened by an engineer and every CV is approved by a CTO before you see it, through the same process as our technical recruitment service.

🧭

A local CTO on the ground

A UK-based full-time or fractional CTO leads the team day to day: architecture, code review, 1-1s and delivery, reporting back to your US leadership in your morning.

📍

Wherever suits your budget

Remote across the UK keeps costs down: the median software engineer advert in Manchester is £70,000, against £100,000 in London (IT Jobs Watch, six months to October 2026). Hybrid works well for a London core with people elsewhere. And if you want a dedicated office, we find it, book it for you or help you book it, and bring the team in.

🔑

A clear path to owning it

Start as a Managed R&D Lab and move the team into your own UK subsidiary when you are ready. Under UK TUPE rules, employees' terms and length of service normally move with them (GOV.UK).

Two ways to set up your UK team

Both come with CTO-led hiring and a local full-time / fractional CTO. The difference is who the employer is, and who deals with UK accounting, legal and HR.

From first call to a working UK team

  • Step 1

    Scope the team

A call with a CTO about the product, the roles, the budget and the timeline. We recommend a model and a location set-up, and quote it.
  • Step 2

    Set up the base

For a Managed R&D Lab, we are the employer, so there is nothing for you to register. For your own subsidiary, our accounting and formation partners register the UK company with you. If you want an office, we find it.
  • Step 3

    Hire the team

Our engineers screen candidates and our CTOs approve every CV. You interview the shortlist and make the final call on every hire.
  • Step 4

    Run and lead it

The local full-time / fractional CTO onboards the team into your codebase and rituals, runs delivery and reports to your leadership at home.
  • Step 5

Grow it, or take it in-house

Add roles as the roadmap grows. When you are ready, move a Lab team into your own UK subsidiary.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the number of roles, their seniority, the location model and whether the local CTO is full-time or fractional. We do not publish prices for this service. We scope it on a call and send you a quote. Salaries are the biggest part of the cost; our guide to UK vs US engineer cost has the current market figures.

In a Managed R&D Lab, Metamindz is the UK employer and runs the team for you, so you do not need a UK company, UK payroll or UK HR. With your own UK subsidiary, your company is the legal employer and you handle accounting, legal, tax and HR, while we still hire the team and provide the local full-time / fractional CTO.

Yes, on request. You can start with a Managed R&D Lab and move the team into your own UK subsidiary later. In the UK, staff transfers like this usually fall under TUPE, which means employees keep their terms and length of service. We agree the transfer terms with you up front.

We coordinate it, and our regulated accounting and formation partners do the registration and provide the registered office. You choose the structure (usually a UK private limited company owned by your US parent) with their advice. Your company then owns and runs it.

No. Remote across the UK is usually the cheapest option, hybrid works for a London core with people elsewhere, and if you want a dedicated office we find it, book it or help you book it, and bring the team there.

If a hire needs visa sponsorship, we can look into sponsoring it for you. Most of the UK talent pool already has the right to work here, so it is rarely a blocker.

Leads the UK team day to day: architecture and code review, 1-1s, delivery and engineering practices, plus regular reporting to your CTO or CEO at home. Full-time or fractional, depending on the size of the team, and included in both models.

London is five hours ahead of New York and eight hours ahead of San Francisco for most of the year. East Coast teams share most of their morning with the UK; West Coast teams usually share an hour or two, so we set up async handovers and protected overlap hours.

You do. In both models, the work is done for you and the IP is assigned to your company under the contract.

US startups and scale-ups that want more engineering capacity than they can afford in San Francisco or New York, and companies in AI, fintech and insurance that want to be close to London's talent and markets.
